![]() Dieting Effects on Your TeethIf you are doing a low carb or a ketogenic diet, your body goes into ketosis, causing your mouth to dry and periods of soft enamel on your teeth, putting you at risk for gum disease. Diets like the fruit detox diet are a battleground of bacteria. Only eating fruit causes your salivary flow to slow. Then you couple that with a mouth that continues to get pounded with sugar foods containing acids. Plaque can begin digging into your teeth quickly. Energy pills used to lose weight cause dehydration and dry mouth. Saliva is crucial to protecting your teeth. Days with a dry mouth can create gum disease, bad breath, and cavities quickly. Exercise and Your Oral HealthWhen exercising, there are only two areas that you have to be concerned about. Mouth breathing and sports drinks. While taking those deep breaths is great for your cardiovascular system, it reduces saliva production and makes your mouth dry. A dry mouth will always be a place for dangerous bacteria to cause decay. Even though sports drinks can be healthy for you to increase performance, they're packed with tooth damaging ingredients, the sugar and acid are a recipe for decay and cavities. The most important thing when you are dieting or exercising is to pay close attention to your oral health. If you notice any changes in your gums, soreness, or bleeding, seek help from our office. This is the beginning sign of gum disease. While exercising, make sure you drink plenty of water, followed by brushing your teeth and using a fluoride mouthwash. If you have further questions, our office is available to help. Call if needed, we can provide suggestions for better oral health. |
