Why Should Cleaning Your Tongue Become A Part Of Your Oral Hygiene Regimen
Posted on 4/20/2020 by Louis Taglia Jr. DDS
Although most people know that it is important to clean their teeth, not many know that it is just as important to clean their tongue too. However, whether to fight bad breath or to get rid of bacteria, Dr. Louis Taglia, Jr. and Dr. Taglia, Jr. at Taglia Advanced Dentistry say that brushing your tongue is essential to good oral health.
Why Should You Clean Your Tongue?
Just like your teeth, your tongue is covered by bacteria. The tongue has a rough, uneven surface and provides plenty of nooks and crannies for bacteria to lodge itself. Even though it cannot develop cavities like your teeth, bacteria on the tongue can still lead to oral conditions unless they are removed. After you eat sticky food or when you wake up in the morning, you may see and feel a buildup on your tongue. This is not just saliva. It is actually a biofilm — living bacteria that have accumulated on the surface of your tongue. Unfortunately, you can't get rid of them by simply rinsing out your mouth or downing a glass of water.
These bacteria can lead to tooth damage and bad breath; hence it is necessary to remove them by brushing.
How to Clean Your Tongue
Keeping your tongue clean is a simple process. Start brushing from the back of the tongue in a back and forth motion and work your way slowly to the tip. Make sure you clean the entire top surface and then rinse out your mouth.
For optimum oral health, make brushing your tongue a part of your oral hygiene regimen. Brushing your tongue can get rid of foul taste and bad breath. However, if it still persists, call us at (312) 757-6434 as it can be a sign of another underlying problem.
