Multiple Tooth Implant
You might know that a dental implant is an effective way to replace a single tooth that is missing. What do you do if you have more than one tooth in a row that are missing or that need to be replaced? Would dental implants not be a good idea in such a case? Even if you need several teeth replaced, you could still be a candidate for dental implants. We here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry are experts on single tooth implants, as well as multiple tooth implants. We would love to discuss your options with you.
What Is a Multiple Tooth Implant?
If you are missing more than one tooth, there are different things that we can do. One of those things could be a multiple tooth implant. With a single tooth implant, we will surgically place a screw in the jaw where the root of the missing tooth was. Once that has healed, we will place a crown on the screw so that you will have a new tooth.
With a multiple tooth implant, we will start the same way. We will place screws in your jaw so that we will be able to hold the implant in place. The difference is that we will not necessarily place a screw where each tooth was. We could place one on each end of the gap. The next step is known as osseointegration. We will place the screws in your jaw, and then we will need to wait for them to fuse. We might need to do a bone graft if there is not enough bone already. We will give you temporary artificial teeth for during this time.
Once the screws are set, you will return, and we will replace your teeth with a bridge. Most dental bridges are not attached to your jaw, but a dental bridge for multiple tooth implant is. You will then have your new teeth. Not everyone is a candidate for a multiple tooth implant. We will want to know about any heart issues that you might have, including a heart murmur.
If you are a heart patient, talk to your cardiologist before making the appointment with us. We will also want to know if you are a smoker. Dental implants are not ideal for smokers, because smoking can impede the osseointegration process. There are a few things that you can expect after the initial surgery. There may be some swelling to your face. There could be minor bleeding and bruising. There could also be some pain at the site of the implant. We will talk to you about pain medication, and you can also use an ice pack to help with the pain and swelling.
Dental implants are a great way to replace one or more teeth. Eating, talking, and smiling will all be easier. Here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry, we want to do all that we can to help you to have a healthy mouth and smile. Call us at (312) 757-6434 to set up your next appointment.
