Elmwood Park, IL

A rendering of healthy gums after a gum graft from Taglia Advanced Dentistry in Elmwood Park, ILYou might know a lot about your teeth, but how much do you know about your gums? Receding gums are a common problem. There are many different causes, including genetics and age. It might not be because of poor dental habits. If left untreated, receding gums could lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss.

It could also lead to mouth pain, especially if the root of your tooth is exposed. If your gums have been receding, you need to see us immediately. Gum problems are also something that the staff here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry will look for during a routine cleaning and exam. If your gums are receding, we might suggest a gum graft. Here is what you will want to know about this common procedure.

Basic Information on Gum Grafts

If you have heard horror stories about gum grafts, do not believe them. The procedure is not as scary or as painful as you might have heard.

With a gum graft, we will need to take tissue from one part of your mouth and graft it to the area of your gums that is receding. We will often take the tissue from the roof of your mouth. We will often use general anesthesia for a gum graft. Some patients prefer sedation dentistry instead. During the actual surgery, we will start by taking a small amount of tissue from the top of your mouth. We will then graft it to your gums where they are receding. Often stitches that will dissolve will be used.

You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery. Once you are home, you can use ice if there is swelling. We will talk to you about pain medicines and may have prescribed for you. Recovery from gum graft surgery should not take too long. You will probably want to stick with a liquid diet for the first 24 hours, and then eat soft foods while your mouth heals. Make sure that your foods are nutrient-rich, because that will aid in your healing.

You will still need to brush your teeth but stay away from the area where you had the graft until it heals. We might recommend a special mouthwash to use during this time. One thing that may take a little while, even after you heal, is getting used to the way that your mouth has changed. There could be a small hole-like area on the top of your mouth, and it might take a little while to get used to it. Do not play with it or touch it with your tongue until it heals.

A gum graft will help your gums to stay healthy and will keep your teeth healthier as well. Here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry we have been able to help others with this procedure, and we would like to do the same thing for you as well.
