Root Canal Therapy
Elmwood Park, IL
Tooth decay is not always obvious when you look in the mirror. You might be able to tell if you have plaque on your teeth, but you might not have any idea what is going on below the surface of the tooth. That is why it is so important to visit us here at Taglia Advanced Dentistry regularly. We will check to see if there is anything else that needs to be treated. If there is a problem inside your tooth, we might recommend a root canal.
What to Expect From a Root Canal
Root canals are misunderstood. It is a much-feared dental procedure, but it should not be that way. A root canal can help your mouth to feel better. Sometimes the decay goes deep inside a tooth. Your teeth are filled with pulp, and when the decay affects the pulp, we need to do something about it. That is often when we will recommend a root canal, which is sometimes also known as root canal therapy.
During a root canal, we will drill a small hole in one of the canals that are part of the root of your tooth. We will then remove the damaged pulp and clean the whole area. We do not want to leave an empty tooth, so it will be filled with a substance called gutta-percha. This will not only fill the tooth, but it will also seal it.
A root canal is usually done under local anesthesia, although we can use sedation if we need to because of fear. It will sometimes require more than one visit, especially if you have more than one tooth that is infected. There is one thing that you need to remember if we recommend a root canal. Often the only other choice would be to extract your tooth. When we recommend a root canal, we are trying to save it. This is a procedure with an extremely high success rate.
Have someone drive you home after the procedure. If you have swelling, you can use ice to help keep it down. We will have talked to you ahead of time about pain medication. As you wait for your mouth to heal, you will want to stick to soft foods.
We will schedule a follow-up appointment so that we will be able to check on you and make sure that you healed correctly. When this checkup is could depend on how bad the damage to the tooth was.
One thing that many patients are surprised about after a root canal is that there was not that much pain. It is not a pain-free procedure, but it is usually bearable.
